Hello, Class!

I heard you won today’s game! Way to go!!!

Friday’s literature test will be based on the following topics:

-”The Tell-Tale Heart”
The Hitchhiker
– “Lamb to the Slaughter” (just like you have seen on ITBS, HSPT, and your future SAT’s, Reading Comprehension tests are based on previously unread material. You will be allowed to have this story during your test. Please read it tonight).

– “The Raven” (very basic information)
– Background information on Edgar Allan Poe (review your quiz AND the timelines from my earlier blog posts and your webquest).
– Literary terms: (suspense, irony, inference, foreshadowing, flashback, and elements of fiction (setting, point of view, types of point of view, setting, conflict, etc.)
– Know the authors to each short story/ play
– Be able to explain how Poe uses his OWN suspense techniques in his stories.
– Explain how authors create suspense (this is a bit different from Poe’s technique… see notes and book).
– Notes from my previous blog entries on suspense
– Review worksheets and notes
– Be able to compare and contrast characters and events from all stories and apply the literary terms to them and new examples given on the test.
– Know the difference between mood and tone and explain how authors use it in their works.

HW- Please complete the Hitchhiker packet.

For 5 points extra credit, post one “Mrs. Beadel-type” question on this blog post. The question should reflect any of the above study topics and should serve as a review for your peers. Basic, 2nd grade-type questions will not count. Provide your full answer after your question… leave a few spaces).

    True or false:
The author of The hitchhiker created suspense by repeating words or phrases, using vivid descriptions, and describing a characters anxiety or fear. For example: the intro where the protagonists lists everything he knows about himself when he wanted to make sure he was sane, the rain on the hitchhikers shoulders and the way he looked exactly the same every single time

    Essay Question:
Do you think the hitchhiker was a real being or a figment of the main character’s imagination?
Use your knowledge and interpretation of the story to answer this question.
    Answer: Personal Opinion
My opinion is that the hitchhiker was a figment of his imagination. Not only did the girl not see him, but the man at the gas station didn’t either! Then, he says he sees him with fresh drops of rain on his shoulders and it has never rained except on the day he died. Then, he here’s from Mrs. Whitney that he supposedly died! For these reasons, I think the hitchhiker is the Angel of Death who is part of the main character’s subconsious.

What do you think made the narrator of the “Tell-Tale Heart” confess?

I most definitely think the narrator felt guilt which lead to his/her confession. I referred to the narrator as a his/her because the narrator didn’t specify his/her gender, just a little thing I caught on to. Back to the point, I felt that the beating of the heart symbolizes his/her guilt. Reminding him/her what he/she just finished doing. In the story, you notice that the narrator gives himself/herself excuses for what he/she did to make it sound okay, kind of like a little pep talk. The narrator thought that maybe they knew what he/she did and came here to make a mockery out of it. This confession lets us know that guilt did win and the narrator wasn’t able to handle his/her guilty conscience any longer.

Why do you think the main character, Ronald, picked up the girl but not the hitchhiker?

I think there were two reasons as to why Ronald Adams picked one but not the other, with one being more prominent than the other. The major reason, I think, is because of physical appearance. The hitchhiker is described as “…thin, nondescript, with a cap pulled over his eyes,” and with “…a cheap overnight bag in one hand.” The girl, however, was never described as any of this. The minor reason would be because his mother told him not to pick up anyone. However, when he tried driving past the hitchhiker, something happened, so he wanted to ask someone else questions, like another hitchhiker.

What do word connotations help communicate?

Word connotations communicate the author’s tone. Tone is the attutide the the author has about the piece. Word connotations can be negative or positive depending on what word you use. An example can be like conceited (negative) and confident (positive).

What do you think Mr. Maloney said that motivated Mrs. Maloney to kill him?

I think that he wanted a divorce. She was so upset because she was very in love with him and she was even six months pregnant.

I don’t have the Hitchhiker packet. When did we get it? I might have been absent or left early. Also, how do we get to the book in ClassZone? I can’t figure it out.
